JANE AUSTEN
FOR TEACHERS
Teachers using Literature
for Literacy
+ Life
Jane Austen for Teachers, an arm of the Jane Austen Collaborative, offers unique pedagogical trainings and professionalization opportunities to teachers, particularly those attending the Jane Austen Summer Program (JASP). Select primary and secondary school teachers can win a scholarship to be a Teaching Fellow and spend up to two days after the symposium working collaboratively on a publishable project synthesizing ideas taken from JASP lectures and discussion groups.
Preparation
Teacher Fellows will meet virtually to discuss classroom goals. Teachers will also select a topic or question to follow during JASP.
At JASP
During the four days of the JASP symposium,
Teacher Fellows will meet with JAFT directors to discuss issues of interest and ways to implement Austen in the classroom.
At JASP+
Expanding on the inspiring ideas that emerged during JASP, JAFT invites participants to begin creating teaching tools that work in the classroom. JAFT teachers are funded to stay longer to participate in workshops, build projects, and collaborate as a community.
Future
Future JAFT collaborations might center on podcasting, working with digital archives, digitizing manuscripts or other textual objects, or building interactive, annotated versions of the novels to bring into classrooms anywhere.
The possibilities are endless!
